The push buttons work but my nails seemed to make it a little harder to push them, especially with the rice. My nails seemed to somewhat prevent me from pushing the button all the way in so the rice took a bit to come out. However, the beans and peas come out easily and enough to fill up the container drawer.
With the small opening for the compartments to drop food through to the container drawer, I wouldn't recommend using this for things like cereal, dog food, etc., but I do like the dispenser well enough to recommend it for grains, beans, and other smaller foods.
It to work, but when you push the buttons for certain nuts maybe one will drop into the cup. We tried Shelled pistachio nuts that are small, cashews, almonds, pumpkins seeds, walnut pieces and it was the same with them all. Only one or two would fall into the cup and I had to push the button all the way in as far as it would go and still the few fell.
